Bill Kaigle is a lifelong Vermonter who resides in Milton with his wife Jen and two young children. He is primarily a self-taught artist whose desire to create natural pieces of organic beauty, introspection and carefree whimsy - as well as to capture a sense of time and place - shine through clearly in his sign art.
Bill enjoys many mediums, including photography and pencil & ink illustration. But his love of letterforms and the art of typographic style began at an early age - he handlettered mailboxes at the age of 12 - and has held the strongest. After earning degrees in Marketing and Business Management from Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, he followed his passion into a career in the graphic arts, in which he continues as a graphic designer. The marriage of today's modern digital technology with Bill's eye for classic composition and design has produced beautifully functional works of art. Travel to Europe has also fueled his passion for historic sign and poster art, influencing his color choices and his creation of richly patinaed surfaces.
Bill works mostly in acrylic paints on reclaimed wood - barnboard, flat driftwood and beautifully aged painted wood. He uses classic colors and applies a natural looking patina. For durability, he uses oil-based paints on all outdoor wood signs, as well as for the classically styled commercial signs he builds from new materials.
Blending his imagination with a unique sign message occasionally leads to mixed media projects. Many inspirations come largely from nature, and Bill often "follows the wood's lead" to find what will look best on a particular piece.
Bill's sign art has been exhibited and sold at shops, libraries, coffeehouses, and art & craft shows in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire since 1999. Custom orders are accepted, and even encouraged. Bill estimates that half of all the signs he makes are custom. He greatly enjoys exploring the emotional attachments and unique ideas of his clients, many of whom have said they can feel Bill's excitement when they start with concepts for their signs, and he brings them to life!
