Bill Kaigle

Well hello there....I’m Bill and I love signs. I’m a lifelong Vermonter and primarily self-taught artist. My desire to create natural pieces of organic beauty, introspection and carefree whimsy – as well as to capture a sense of time and place – shines through clearly in my designs and the signs Jen and I create.

I enjoy many mediums, including photography and pencil & ink illustration. But my love of letterforms and the art of typographic style began at an early age – I handlettered mailboxes at the age of 12 – and has held the strongest. After earning degrees in Marketing and Business Management from Champlain College, I followed this passion into a career in the graphic arts. The marriage of today’s modern digital technology with my eye for classic composition and design produces beautifully functional works of art. Travel to Europe has also fueled my passion for historic sign and poster art, influencing color choices and creation of richly patinaed surfaces.

Jen and I work mostly in acrylic paints on reclaimed wood – barnboard, flat driftwood and beautifully aged painted wood. We use classic colors and apply a natural looking patina. For durability, we use enamel paints on all outdoor wood signs, as well as for the classically styled commercial signs we build from new materials.

Blending my imagination with a unique sign message occasionally leads to mixed media projects. Many inspirations come from nature, and I’ll often ‘follow the wood’s lead’ toward what will look best on a particular piece.

Our sign art has been exhibited and sold at shops (including currently Milton’s Moonlight Gifts, Five Corners Antiques in Essex Junction and Vintage Inspired in Burlington), libraries, restaurants (find us at Milton’s Sweet Pea Cafe and Apollo diner, and Jericho’s Village Cup this spring), and art & craft shows in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire since 1999. Custom orders are accepted and encouraged. About half of all the signs we make are custom orders - I really enjoy exploring the emotional attachments, creativity and unique ideas of our clients, and then bringing them to life!

I reside in Milton with my wife Jen, daughter Anna and son Evan. You can contact me today at 802-893-7387, Bill@YeOldeSignShoppe.net. A printed or PDF sample portfolio is available upon request.
